NeuromodulatorA neuromodulator can reduce the bulk of a muscle as well as its movement. Treating the masseter softens a wide lower face; the same principle applies to the calf and the trapezius, with the change appearing over weeks rather than days.
Muscle bulk responds to use. A masseter that clenches and grinds for years hypertrophies in the same way any worked muscle does, and it widens the lower face at its broadest point. Reducing the force of contraction lets that bulk settle back, which is why the change is gradual and why it outlasts the effect on movement.
The same logic applies elsewhere. A trapezius held in constant tension creates a heavy line from neck to shoulder; a calf that is muscular rather than fatty will not respond to anything aimed at fat.
This is the most commonly requested of the three, usually for facial width, often for clenching, and frequently for both. The jaw continues to function normally for eating and speaking — the dose reduces force rather than removing it.
The first change is typically noticed at four to six weeks, with the fullest effect at around three months. Repeated courses tend to hold longer than the first, because the muscle has less bulk to lose each time.
Facial width can come from muscle, from bone, or from fat. Only the first responds to this, which is why the assessment comes before the injection.
Both are larger muscles than the masseter and need correspondingly larger doses, assessed on the muscle in front of you.
There is no downtime. Chewing may feel slightly less strong for the first few weeks after masseter treatment, which settles as you adapt. Results are reviewed at a few weeks, and the course planned from there.
Questions
The first change is usually noticed at four to six weeks, with the fullest effect around three months. It is slower than wrinkle treatment because the muscle has to reduce in bulk, not just move less.
Chewing may feel slightly less strong for the first few weeks, then settles. The dose is chosen to reduce force rather than remove it, so normal eating and speaking continue.
It commonly does, and clenching is a frequent reason for having it. Many people come for the tension and the facial narrowing together.
No. This reduces muscle bulk. If the shape of the calf comes from fat, a different approach is needed, which is what the assessment establishes.
Bring your concern rather than a treatment name. The assessment decides what is actually indicated, and what is not.
